Skills are abilities that your character can learn how to use. You can view all the Skills in Jade Dynasty through the Skill Panel by pressing the [R] key.
To learn a Skill, simply access the Skill Panel, navigate to the desired Skill Tree, and left click on the [+] button in the bottom right-hand corner of the Skill icon. If this button is not available, you have not met all the conditions necessary to learn the Skill. You can see the prerequisites and costs of learning the next rank of a Skill by viewing the Skill description when you position the mouse cursor over it.
There are many various types of Skills in Jade Dynasty – some deal direct damage to a single target, while others attack a predetermined number of targets within an area around your character. Actively used Skills may require a portion of Spirit in order to cast successfully, while others may require an item, other Skill or Health. Certain Skills will apply a damage-over-time ailment to your target, some increase character attributes, while others are passive.
Each Faction has its own unique Skill Tree. You can only spend points on Skills available to your Faction, and only on Skills at or below your current Tier within that Faction. Most Skills have several ranks, and as there are not enough Skill Points to spend on every rank of every Skill, it is important that you plan ahead and choose your Skills wisely.
All Humans start with the same Initiate Skill Tree. Humans must spend at least 8 Skill Points in the Initiate section before they can start learning Skills exclusively available to their own Faction. Humans then must have 24 Skill Points in each Tier before they can spend Skill Points in the next Tier.
All Athan characters are created as members of their Faction, rather than an Initiate. Because of this, they must spend 32 Skill Points in the first Tier of Skills before they can start spending Skill Points in higher Tiers. All other Tiers require only 24 Skill Points.
Tome Skills are a special kind of Faction Skill that use a different skill tree and use Tome Points instead of Skill Points. Tome Skills enhance the effects of your regular Faction Skills.
Right-clicking on any Skill will cause it to be highlighted. This will allow you to see which Skills it influences. This feature is particularly useful when training Tome Skills as you can easily see which Faction Skill will benefit from it.
Note: Please note that the effects of Tome Skills are often only applied after you have logged out and then logged back in.
As you travel through Jade Dynasty you will encounter a number of other more specialized Skills. Every Esper has an Esper Skill which is used to LV up your Esper. Completing Romance quests can open up Romance Skills which make it easier to play with a companion. Clan members gain access to Clan Skills whose power increases through use and Clan contributions. Affinity Skills are available to veteran players who have Ascended and have aligned themselves with an Affinity.
